Well known author and playwright John Mc Ardle today launched a special learning project which seeks to promote literacy in Castleblayney by encouraging as many people in the Community to read in the coming weeks a book titled “Across the Barricades”.
The project which is being sphere headed and promoted by a local group Partners in Learning is designed to encourage interaction between people on a common literacy topic and is hoped will give people an incentive to continue reading other books.
The book which is available in the library and Mc Connon’s bookshop tells the story of a friendship between a Catholic boy and a Protestant girl during the Troubles in Belfast.
The launch was chaired by Leanne Gallagher, Vice Chairperson of the Partners in Learning Group and included inputs from students attending all the local schools as well as from Alan Ryan on behalf of Monaghan VEC who have provided financial support to the project under County Monaghan Peace III programme.
The loudest applause however was held for local man John Mc Ardle who officially launched the project.
Partners in Learning is a local committee set up under the Home/School/Community Liaison scheme, comprising of parents, students, teachers and members of the wider community. Their focus is on the educational welfare of our young people.
