Castleblayney drama festival committee has announced that they will be presenting two new awards in the course of this year’s drama festival. Both awards will be presented to the drama group for the best set, one in the Open category, the second in the Confined category.
These awards are designed to commemorate the role of Tommy Duffy both as a member of the drama festival committee and as a member of Castleblayney Players who was closely engaged in set design for a series of productions with the Castleblayney group. Sadly, Tommy died towards the end of last year after a brief illness.
The first award has been presented to the drama festival committee by the Duffy family, the second award has been commissioned by the festival committee and both reflect Tommy’s great joy in woodworking and working with furniture. There is no doubt that the presentation of these awards will be quite poignant for many members of Tommy’s family, the committee and indeed the audience but it will be also be looked upon with great anticipation.
Castleblayney drama festival begins on Friday 5 March, running until Saturday 13 March. The festival always looks for someone from the local area with an interest in the Arts to open the festival. This year’s festival will be opened by Gary Carville, who is known as a musician, historian, lecturer and administrator as well as being a member of Monaghan County Council. This opening takes place next Friday evening prior to the first performance of the festival. Performances start each evening at 8pm in Íontas theatre, Castleblayney.
