Castleblayney Tidy Towns Committee with assistance from members of the Peace Garden Committee and two of the slaves purchased at the Muckno Mania Slave Auction in July, namely TC Conlon and Mary Coyle as well as some other locals were involved in early spring planting on Saturday last.
The Tidy Towns group as part of their preparations for the 2010 Tidy Towns competition have indentified suitable areas on the Towns approach roads which can be planted with appropriate hedging.
On Saturday last a piece of bank on the Carrickmacross road beside the show grounds which had previously been cleaned up for planting with assistance from Michael Carroll of EarthLink’s Landscaping was the focus of attention.
Over 25 people turned up for the planting of hedging on Saturday which comprised of cornus alba sibirica and cornus albla sanguinia. The hedging is more commonly known as red and gold dog wood.
Weather conditions were ideal for the planting and on completion a well deserved cup of tea was available for all the workers. Each year for the next three years this section of road along with other sections of the approach roads to the town will be enhanced by hedge planting to improve the entrance of Castleblayney and to act on habitable and wildlife. This project will enhance the approach road to Castleblayney and assist the Tidy Towns application in the National Competition. The linking with Peace Garden Committee will also prove useful.
Tidy Towns wish to thank all the participants on the day, Castleblayney Enterprise Centre and Castleblayney Plant Hire for their support on this project.
